<title>Local Drug Store Sustains Over $700 in Damage Following Vandalism</title>
<link>http://waxo.com/news/modules.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2013</link>
<description>A recent vandalism at Walgreens left the store with over $700 in losses. According to reports filed with the Lewisburg Police Dept., an unidentified male and female couple entered the store last week and caused quite a bit of damage. Store officials say that employees checking the store aisles noticed several items out of place and some damaged merchandise. A check of the store’s surveillance tape showed the couple in the cosmetic aisle shopping. The male was taped putting on deodorant and then putting it back on the shelf. The male patron then reportedly wrote on several of the items with a marker and even poured some of the products out on other merchandise and a shelf using nail polish and lotion. The woman was also seen in the tape placing items in her purse but the tape failed to show if she left the store with the merchandise. Anyone who may have seen this couple in the store around the 28th of April is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 359-4867.</description>

<title>SALES TAX RATE ON FOOD TO DECREASE BEGINNING JULY 1, 2012</title>
<link>http://waxo.com/news/modules.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2011</link>
<description>House Bill 3761/Senate Bill 3763, passed by the legislature on April 27, 2012, provides for a reduction in the state sales and use tax rate on sales of food and food ingredients. Effective July 1, 2012, the state sales and use tax rate on sales of food and food ingredients will be reduced from 5.5% to 5.25%.

With the change, food and food ingredients will be subject to a reduced state sales and use tax rate of 5.25% plus the applicable local sales and use tax rate. Prepared food, dietary supplements, candy, alcoholic beverages and tobacco continue to be subject to the general state sales and use tax rate of 7% plus the applicable local sales and use tax rate. Existing laws defining which items are considered food and food ingredients remain unchanged by the new legislation.

Businesses selling food items subject to the reduced rate of sales and use tax are advised to begin making the necessary changes to allow for the new rate beginning July 1, 2012. Changes to cash registers and accounting systems should be completed by the July 1, 2012 effective date. However, businesses must continue to collect and remit the existing 5.5% tax on sales of food and food ingredients made through June 30, 2012 to the Department of Revenue.

The Department of Revenue is responsible for the administration of state tax laws and motor vehicle title and registration laws established by the legislature and the collection of taxes and fees associated with those laws. The Department of Revenue collects approximately 91 percent of total state tax revenue. During the 2011 fiscal year, the department collected $10.4 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, the Department of Revenue collects taxes for local, county and municipal governments. During the 2011 fiscal year, local government collections by the Department of Revenue exceeded $2.0 billion. In collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance. The department also apportions revenue collections for distribution to the various state funds and local units of government. To learn more about the department, log on to www.TN.gov/revenue.

<title>TENNESSEE NAMED ONE OF THE BEST STATES FOR BUSINESS</title>
<link>http://waxo.com/news/modules.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=2010</link>
<description>Chief Executive magazine named Tennessee one of the top four states in the nation for business in its eighth annual survey of Best and Worst States for Business. More than 650 chief executive officers rated all 50 states in three general categories: taxation and regulation, quality of workforce and living environment. Tennessee ranked fourth for the second consecutive year. Rounding out the top five were Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Indiana. The Chief Executive magazine honor is the latest in a number of awards Tennessee has received for its economic development efforts recently. In March, Trade &amp; Industry Development magazine named Amazon.com, Inc., General Motors, Quaprotek USA, MANN+HUMMEL USA and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development among the recipients of its 2012 Corporate Investment &amp; Community Impact (CiCi) Awards, totaling the most for any state.
